A pro-Brexit mayor of a French town has proposed to name a street "Rue du Brexit" in a reference to Britain's vote to leave the EU,camping sex video but the joke has backfired.

Julian Sanchez, 33, a rising star in Marine Le Pen's National Front party, announced that the city council of Beaucaire in southern France had backed his proposal with a 23 to 9 vote last week.

He described it on Twitter as an “homage to the decision of the sovereign British people”:

Sanchez told radio station France Bleuthat the party had "already received messages of congratulations from Great Britain".

However, many Twitter users were quick to note that the road in question is in a bleak industrial area and is itself a "road to nowhere" that winds in a circle to return to Rue Robert Schuman, named for a French statesman who is widely considered one of the EU's founding fathers:
