Donald Trump gathered the biggest players in Silicon Valley at his gilded New York tower Wednesday afternoon. Amazon's Jeff Bezos was there,Chris Cassidy Archives seated next to Google executives. So was Sheryl Sandberg from Facebook, sitting right next to Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
But where was Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey or anyone from what is Trump's favorite social media platform?

Yes, Trump's failed attempt to have a custom emoji made for the #CrookedHillary hashtag may have kept Twitter out in the cold Wednesday.
The Trump campaign had $5 million set aside to create two custom emoji that would appear alongside sponsored hashtags during the debates. But that didn't happen.
Gary Coby, the director of advertising and fundraising for the Trump campaign, wrote about the hashtag denial and accused the company of limiting the campaign's advertising.

In a Medium blog post just after the election, Coby detailed the back-and-forth dealings with Twitter. Coby said the team collaborated with Twitter on designs for the hashtag emoji, but that the emoji were eventually cut.
Denying those emoji requests seems to have backfired and kept the company on the outside looking in at the meeting where Trump talked about a number of topics, including trade deals and job creation.

After reports of the ordeal surfaced in October, Twitter said in a statement, “We have had specific discussions with several political organizations, including the Trump campaign, regarding branded emojis as part of broad advertising campaigns on Twitter. We believe that political advertising merits a level of disclosure and transparency that branded political emojis do not meet, and we ultimately decided not to permit this particular format for any political advertising.”
Twitter declined to comment on the Trump meeting this afternoon.
Yet, Trump’s campaign still credits Twitter with his victory.
“Facebook and Twitter were the reason we won this thing,” Trump’s digital director Brad Parscale told Wiredlast month. “Twitter for Mr. Trump. And Facebook for fundraising.”
Another theory, ironically circulating the Twitterverse, pegged Twitter as perhaps “too small” of a company to warrant a seat.

With Apple’s $624 billion, Facebook’s $353 billion, Alphabet’s $562 billion, Amazon’s $372 billion, Twitter’s market valuation of $14 billion pales in comparison.
“Aside from what they did on the emoji, does Twitter's size/market cap even warrant being at such a meeting. I know we all talk about Facebook/Twitter/Google in same sentence, but business wise, they don't compare,” a source familiar with the situation told Mashable.

An even simpler theory? Table size.

Dorsey, meanwhile, kept his Twitter timeline filled with updates on his “too small” company. On Wednesday, Twitter finally made it possible to stream and comment on live video directly from the app. Dorsey also re-shared his interview with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Keep tweeting, Jack. There’s sure to be plenty more meetings.
