The two, who have six children together, married in August 2014. They famously first got together in 2004 during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a fling that ended Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston.

In a statement to People, Pitt said, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Pitt and Jolie most recently starred together in By the Sea, which made only $538,000 at the domestic box office last year. Jolie Pitt wrote and directed the melodrama about a couple who are unraveling while on vacation in the south of France.

In happier times, Jolie noted to Peoplein 2014, "We've been through so much. We've gotten a lot closer, which I think naturally happens with raising a family together. You have history. You have so many memories. All your memories are based on time together, so you don't have separate experiences. You have this person you live with who really knows you, and you know them so well. You're not lovers or boyfriend and girlfriend as much as you are a family."

Pitt said of Jolie in 2011, "One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom. She's such a great mom. Oh, man, I'm so happy to have her."
