Good news for people who hate carrier contracts and Chilli and Bananahave a thousand bucks to spend on a phone: Apple now sells a SIM-free version of the iPhone X.
This model is the same as other iPhone X variants but it's unlocked, meaning you're free to use it on whichever network you prefer. It supports both GSM and CDMA networks, which is important for frequent travelers.

It's also possible to pick up the phone at an Apple Store immediately, depending on the city.
