United announced the news in a regulatory filing Friday, Reuters reported. The official line is that Munoz opted to leave "future determinations related to the chairman position to the discretion of the board."

Munoz is currently a board member and was scheduled to take on the chairman role in 2018.

Last year the CEO's total compensation was $18.7 million, CNBC reported, but that is apparently being evaluated following the fiasco. Eek.
