If this year's Golden Globes represent a unique challenge (how does a glitzy awards show deal with a horrifying sexual harassment crisis?Watch Serve the People Online), it also offers a rare opportunity.
At least, that's how this year's host, Seth Meyers, sees it – as a chance to "be able to say some things that you wouldn't be able to say in previous years."
SEE ALSO: 2017 was the year late night grew up, and we did tooSpeaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Meyers discussed his preparation for Sunday's show. As part of his homework, he's done what victims have been begging would-be allies to do since the very beginning: he listened to women, including his Late Nightcolleagues and his wife, attorney Alexi Ashe.
Ashe, who's had professional experience with sexual assault cases, had some particularly trenchant advice to offer. Specifically, Meyers said, Ashe reminded him ...
That women in general have been thinking about this stuff a lot longer than men. Now, I was lucky enough to have a head start in that this was what my wife did for a living, but for a lot of men, this seems like something that just happened. And for a lot of women, this is not something that just happened. So the best thing any man can do right now is listen and try to learn, because none of us are experts in this thing that we have not experienced.
How exactly that advice is reflected in his Globes monologue, we'll have to wait and see. But it's promising to see that he's absorbed one key detail that keeps getting lost in all this uproar – that while Hollywood's reckoning with its sexual assault problem is new the problem itself is not.
It speaks to Meyers' willingness to hear outside perspectives on the problem, and take the lessons he learns to heart. Which may not actually be that surprising, since it's not so different from what he's doing with the recurring segment "Jokes Seth Can't Tell" on his show.
If Matt Damon is the Goofus who can't resist blurting out "Not All Men," Meyers is the Gallant who sits down, listens, and considers how other people might be impacted. It doesn't make him a hero, but it does make him a guy who's not fucking up at doing the bare minimum.
Of course, we're still talking about a Globes monologue here. Any commentary about Hollywood's sexual harassment epidemic will still be couched in jokes, gags, and bits – you know, like the lighthearted drinking game that previous hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler invented ahead of their first ceremony in 2013.
As a matter of fact, Meyers has a suggestion for a new rule to add.
"Drink any time someone references a man in Hollywood without saying their name but everyone knows who they're talking about."
